Minecraft: Java Edition		 @Xband Well Alex was added long after Steve?'s texture changed, and Alex was added to have a different player model, hints the 3 pixel/voxel wide arms. Alex's skin was loosely based off an old render and by the point she was added I think it became pretty accepted that Steve? was male.
Also I will always look at the original texture to be a smile, never a beard.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate		 It might be something similar to a tool Blender has that can import 2D images into it. When you import a 2D image into Blender, the 2D image gets textured onto a flat 3D plane.

Hopefully this can explain it a little bit.

Textures (Updated)		 I've seen the blue star box texture in-game, and man, it looks like a PS1 texture, making it look half-updated.

Ripping assets from this game must be really really tough. Unless if I am not aware that the game uses many formats in one category alone.
